Reading a jewellery quote

  1. Metal value. Weight × the live gram price for the stamped karat. This part should match this calculator within a few percent.

  2. Making charge. The jeweller’s fee, as a percentage or an amount per gram. It depends on design and shop, and is the part you can negotiate.

  3. Tax. Applied to metal plus making charge where local rules say so. The presets above use standard national rates.

Frequently asked questions

How is the price of gold jewellery calculated?

Jewellery price = metal value + making charge + tax. Metal value is weight × the live gram price for the karat (22k is $118.17 per gram right now). The making charge is the jeweller’s fee for design and labour; tax is applied on top according to local rules.

What are making charges?

Making charges (also called wastage or labour) are what the jeweller adds for manufacturing the piece. They are quoted either as a percentage of the metal value or as a fixed amount per gram, and vary widely with design complexity and shop. Ask for them in writing — they are usually the most negotiable part of the price.

Is tax charged on gold jewellery?

In most countries, yes. Standard rates include VAT of 5% in the UAE, 15% in Saudi Arabia and 20% in the UK, and GST of 3% in India. Rules for investment gold (bars and coins) differ and are often exempt — check the receipt for how tax was applied.

Why is the jeweller’s price higher than this calculator?

Shops may also add a premium over the spot-derived metal price, hallmarking or stone charges, or round prices up. If the gap is large, ask the jeweller to split the bill into metal, making charge and tax so each part can be compared.
