Gold/silver ratio

One troy ounce of gold buys 75.1 ounces of silver right now ($4,009 ÷ $53.36). The ratio is how traders judge whether silver is cheap or dear relative to gold.

What moves the silver price?

Silver is both a precious metal and an industrial one: about half of yearly demand comes from electronics, solar panels and other industry, so it reacts to the economy as well as to the same forces as gold — real interest rates, the US dollar and safe-haven buying. That double role makes silver more volatile than gold; a move of 1–2% in a day is ordinary.

Like gold, silver is quoted per troy ounce. Per-gram prices are pure arithmetic from spot (÷ 31.1034768), and purity scales them: sterling .925 jewellery contains 92.5% of the silver in a fine .999 bar of the same weight.

Frequently asked questions

How much is silver per gram today?

Fine (.999) silver is worth $1.71 per gram in USD as of 05:45 UTC, and sterling (.925) silver $1.59. The figure is recomputed every minute from the live spot price.

What is the difference between .999 and .925 silver?

Fine silver (.999) is 99.9% pure and is used for bullion bars and coins. Sterling silver (.925) is 92.5% silver alloyed with copper for strength, and is the standard for jewellery and cutlery. A gram of sterling therefore contains 7.4% less silver than a gram of fine silver.

Is this the price a dealer will pay me?

No. This is the metal value at spot. Dealers sell bullion above spot and buy below it; for jewellery and cutlery, buyers pay for the silver content only and deduct their margin. Use these figures as the baseline to compare offers.

How is the silver price per gram calculated?

Spot silver is quoted per troy ounce (31.1034768 grams). We divide spot by 31.1034768, multiply by the purity (0.999, 0.925 or 0.900) and convert with the day’s exchange rate — the same arithmetic as our gold prices.
