Frequently asked questions

How do I know if a gold offer is fair?

Compare it with the melt value — the weight × the live gram price for the karat. When selling, an honest buyer can tell you their payout as a percentage of melt; when buying, the price above melt should be explained by making charges, tax and margin.

What percentage of melt value is a good selling price?

Refiners and specialist buyers typically pay 80–95% of melt; high-street and pawn shops often 60–80%. Anything under 60% is well below the usual range and worth a second quote.

Why would a buyer pay less than melt value?

The buyer has to test, refine and resell the metal, and keeps a margin for that. The more the item needs (testing, separating stones, small quantities), the larger the deduction tends to be.
